“Kolymbethra: The Food Basket of Ancient Agrigento, Sicily” by Mary Knight

The Culinary Historians of San Diego will present “Kolymbethra: The Food Basket of Ancient Agrigento,” by Mary Knight, at 10:30 a.m. October 14, 2023, in the Neil Morgan Auditorium of the San Diego Central Library, 330 Park Blvd., San Diego. The event is free and open to the public. A tasting will follow the presentation.

Sicily is famous for its Mediterranean-influenced food and Mt. Etna wines, but how did this cultural menage arrive on the shores of this breathtaking island? Take a culinary trip through time from ancient Sicily’s Kolymbethra Gardens with foods like ricotta and honey-infused cakes to present-day regional specialties such as granita and arancini. Sicily’s rich heritage began with the Greeks, who discovered an agricultural Mecca and profitable trading opportunities. Those gave rise to flourishing cities that rivaled even Athens. Many cultures battled for control of this biodiverse island, each contributing new Mediterranean food and wines, making Sicily a gourmet’s dream.
